The Jaboticaba, commonly referred to as the Brazilian Grape Tree, is a small, evergreen bushy tree. Usually found in areas of Brazil only, it has now been introduced to other places in the world, for them to witness its beauty.

The shrub is in the shape of a dome, growing to the size of 10-15 inches. Growing upward and outward, the Jaboticaba gathers much ground due to its wide spread. Accompanying its dense branches are its lush green oval leaves. Elongating 0.75 inches to 3 inches, the leaves are smooth and up to an inch wide. The smoothness of the leaves gives it a peculiar quality compared to others of its kind, giving it a leathery feel.

The beauty of this tree is enhanced with its yellow-white flowers. Sometimes growing singularly, but mostly in clusters of four, they emerge rather grandly from the trunk and branches, beckoning all to revel in its glory. However, the spotlight of the 4-petalled flowers is stolen by the delicious plump fruit hanging from the branches of the tree. This juicy fruit also emerges in clusters mostly, with a maroon-ish exterior, with a tinge of white in its pulp. Albeit having a thicker skin, the fruit has a taste very similar to grapes. It can be devoured raw for a taste of nature, or made into incredibly delicious jams and jellies, and even wines.

Whether you wish to up your landscape game with a glorious bonsai or are attracted to it because of the fruits it bears – the Jaboticaba is the perfect choice.
