The elm tree is a deciduous tree that can reach 40 meters high. The trunk is thick and not always completely straight since it can sometimes occur in a twisted way, thereby making it a perfect shrub for bonsia. The peculiarity of this tree is that when it gets old the inside of the trunk becomes hollow. The trunk is covered by a rough, cracked and brown coloured bark which can be sometimes dark and sometimes gray. Its silhouette is of dense foliage which emerges from its numerous thin branches, which are simple, alternate, in a hollow way. The edges of the leaves are doubly sawn and armored. The flowers are grouped into inflorescences that can gather up to 30 flowers. These give rise to samara shaped fruit that spreads before the leaves when completely formed. Fruit appear at the end of winter.
